Why House MD psychoanalysis Reveals Weakness, Not Genius

As I was taking a bath, the thought of cleaning oneself ignited a chain of thoughts for me. At first, I considered cleaning as the act of putting things in order, which led me to think about Jordan Peterson. Then, I started thinking about House, M.D., though I can’t remember why I made that connection.

This idea started there House MD psychoanalysis.

I know he’s a genius and that he cares, but what kind of strong man kicks someone who’s already down? Throughout the series, we’ve seen House carelessly insult people and mock them for being “stupid.” Yet, most of the time, his targets are either irrelevant to the story, submissive, or cognitively or physically impaired.

When confronted with strong characters like Michelle Trotter and Edward Vogler, his ego crumbles like a fragile biscuit. He can’t seem to face these characters alone; he always relies on enablers like Cuddy and Wilson.

Afterward, I posted my idea to the House, M.D. subreddit, hoping to spark a meaningful discussion. However, instead of engaging thoughtfully, the subreddit responded with rather negative remarks. I’m proud to say that I took the criticism with grace.

You sound like the most boring character on House MD. Which you might take as a compliment. I can assure you, it’s not.

I want to share something with you, readers—my hunger for listening to counterarguments didn’t die. So, I took this discussion to the Jordan Peterson subreddit, where I found well-reasoned arguments and counterarguments that helped me shape this blog better.

Although in both subreddit I got total of 0 up-votes it was in interesting experience.

The Crimes of Cuddy and Wilson : House MD psychoanalysis

The only reason Cuddy and Wilson continually rescue House is because he saves lives. Without that justification, no one would bother to look his way. This is why he clings to his Vicodin—not out of fear of losing his edge, but out of fear of losing Cuddy and Wilson, his only protectors and friends.

I believe the writers of the show are aware of this, and they’ve made considerable efforts to mask this vulnerability.

Cuddy’s “Crime”: Cuddy enables House’s reckless behaviour by protecting him from institutional consequences, thus weakening the disciplinary and judicial systems that should have reined him in long ago.

Wilson’s “Crime”: Wilson is portrayed as a hopeless optimist, but why? Does he care about House more than anyone else, or does he just want to be happy while remaining close to House (which seems almost impossible)? His crime lies in enabling House and fuelling his addiction. Wilson treats House’s symptoms but never addresses the root causes of his psychological issues.

Why is House So Weak?

I think House’s weaknesses stem from his father, and not merely from his physical pain. His struggles seem more rooted in childhood trauma—possibly a legacy of his narcissistic father, who in turn may have inherited trauma from House’s grandfather (a fan theory: if House’s grandfather served in WWII, this generational trauma would make a lot of sense).

Is He Brave or Strong for Defying Norms?

He actively goes against the norm. Like it or not, that takes some strength. Driven by selfishness? Sure. Weak? Umm no.

~ a Redditor from House MD Subreddit argued

In his personal life, House only defies norms that inconvenience him or those closest to him. This is exactly what a criminal does; without exaggeration, House is one. When he steps outside societal boundaries in ways that help others or save lives, he’s celebrated as a force for good—but he only does this in the context of treating patients, which is the only reason strong characters like Cuddy put up with him.
